Natural deodorant - is it time to try?

Natural deodorant, alcohol-based spray or 72h protective sweat stick - which is best for your body? We all sweat, and where sweat accumulates, odour follows - the underarms are one of the biggest contributors to body odour

We rely on deodorant so much these days that forgetting to put it on in the morning can feel as bad as not brushing your teeth. Smelly armpits and sweat stains can be embarrassing, but luckily deodorant can help to control armpit odour

Applying deodorant every day

One aspect that all deodorants have in common, whether natural or not, is why we use them and how they work.

Does your deodorant have a long list of chemicals in the ingredients list, or clear natural ingredients?

While we often equate sweat directly with body odour, you may be surprised to discover that sweat itself is actually odourless. Body odour from sweat is the result of our bacteria

Because the underarms are good warm areas, they are ideal for the bacteria that live on the skin. When sweat is added, these bacteria go to work, creating an unpleasant smell in the process. This is where deodorant comes in

Most of the products in the supermarket are not just deodorants but are specifically designed to be antiperspirants. Antiperspirants use aluminium-based ingredients to temporarily block the release of sweat, preventing bacteria from thriving and producing odour.

In addition to these aluminium and alcohol-based ingredients, common deodorants also contain other additives:

  • Preservatives
  • Fragrances, which are often synthetic
  • Other necessary chemicals (dye, preservative)

Natural deodorant and why choose it?

There are a number of reasons why a person might consider using natural deodorant, but ultimately the main reason is the chemicals in the ingredients list

Natural deodorants do not contain aluminium and alcohol-based ingredients and instead use natural ingredients:

  • Baking soda: reduces moisture and neutralises odour
  • Coconut oil and/or shea butter: facilitate application and act as antimicrobial agents
  • Essential oils: provide a pleasant fragrance

Natural deodorants remove the smell of sweat by neutralising it, but still allowing your body to perspire. However, you shouldn't expect them to work like the aluminium-based products sold in the high street from day one. Switching from regular deodorant to natural deodorant can take up to 4 weeks for your body to get used to it

Sweat is natural. Plus, you may not sweat as much as you think. Sweat is the body's way of getting rid of toxins through the lymph nodes under our armpits, if you block the exit, bad stuff gets trapped in the body and needs to get out

The perfect way to start your journey is with Freshik natural deodorant, a plant-infused soft deodorant that is completely aluminium-free and 100% natural.

You should now have a good idea of which deodorants to avoid and what to look out for on the packaging
